The Forbidden City — Zǐjìnchéng — served as the imperial palace of China for nearly 500 years, housing 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Enclosed within crimson walls and a jade moat, it remains the world's largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures and the finest expression of imperial Chinese architecture.
With 9,999 rooms (one short of the heavenly 10,000 to avoid challenging the gods), it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the Palace Museum, containing over 1.8 million artifacts of incomparable cultural significance.
